Cut tofu into 8 slices and squeeze tightly to remove excess water.
Put about 1/3 cup of the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add tofu, and fry on both sides until it turns brown. About 4-5 minutes.
Add the garlic and cook for a minute, then add the ketchup. Cook and stir for about 5 minutes, until the sauce bubbles, thickens, and starts to caramelize around the edges of the pan. Taste and add salt, pepper, as necessary.
