Super Easy Smoked Tofu without a Smoker (Vegan, Vegetarian)

  • 1 box extra firm tofu 
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp liquid smoke
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tbsp water


  1. Cut tofu into 8 slices and squeeze tightly to remove excess water.
  2. Add the Marinade Mixture: liquid smoke, maple syrup & soy sauce. Let it Marinate for 30-60 minutes, flipping the bag over occasionally so the marinade coats evenly. The longer you marinate it the more flavor the tofu absorbs. 
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch, water, maple syrup, and remaining marinade sauce.
  4. Heat a frying pan on medium-high, add the vegetable oil and the tofu in the pan, and fry for about 2 minutes on each side. 
  5. Pour the sauce over your tofu, and heat until it bubbles slightly, then turn it down to simmer. Make sure you watch that you turn the heat down right away, or the sauce will burn because of the maple syrup. 
  6. Serve.
